Once students are identified for the gifted program, K.I.S.D. staff makes a commitment to work with them for success. However, students may, occasionally, not perform in accordance with the standards established for the CHALLENGE program, even with the help of the staff. These students are placed on probation. Students who consistently perform below expected standards will be exited and placed in appropriate classes. Exiting of students from gifted/talented programs services will be based on multiple criteria including student performance in the program. The selection committee finalizes exiting of students after consultation with parents and student regarding the most appropriate educational placement. In order for a student to be placed on probation or removed from the Challenge program, the following guidelines must be observed:

Probation

  1. Teacher sends a progress report to parents not later than the third week of a reporting period.

  2. Copies of the report are filed with the counselor.

  3. If student’s work does not improve or if the student makes a 75 or below for two consecutive six weeks, a conference is held with student, his/her parents, teacher, assistant principal, and or counselor or other staff as needed.

  4. Student is placed on probation and a written growth plan is developed.

Exiting

  1. If the student fails to make a reasonable amount of progress toward
the goals and objectives, the committee may conclude that the
student should be exited from the program.

  2. The parent of a GT student may request that his or her child be
withdrawn from the Challenge program at any time.
