Staff Development / Parental
Awareness: Annual teacher in-service will be held
on characteristics of gifted and talented students and review of the
nomination process. Annual campus/district awareness sessions for families
will be held to provide an overview of the services for gifted and talented
students and assessment procedures.
-
Nomination Process: Students will be nominated
for the program by the completion of the nomination form. The forms may be
completed by a parent, relative, community member, staff member, or by the
student himself/herself. A parent permission form must be signed for testing.
(If the parent declines to grant permission for
testing, the identification process ends; and, the student will not be
eligible for screening for the program within the next 12 months.)
(Follow district-testing calendar.) All first graders will be given the
Naglieri Nonverbal Assessment.
-
Screening Process: The counselor or designee on
each campus conducts testing once a year during the spring. Students are
assessed using measures collected form multiple sources (Naglieri, Planned
Experiences, Student Portfolios, Teacher Nomination forms, Parent Nomination
forms).
-
Selection Process: A 3-5 person campus-based
selection committee will review each student’s profile to determine which
students qualify for the program. The committee will be comprised of an
administrator, counselor, and appropriate staff members who have had training
in the characteristics and needs of gifted children.
-
Placement: Parents of students
who meet the criteria will be notified and must grant permission in order for
their child to participate in Kingsville ISD’s Gifted and Talented program.
