Technology Skills Self-Evaluation

This survey is designed to help you (and us) understand your current level of skills with computer technology. Please judge your level of achievement in each of the following areas. (Be honest but be kind.) Select the button in each category that best describes what you can now do. If you are unsure of the meaning of a category, use the link provided for additional information. The results of this survey will be used to plan professional development activities to improve your technology skills.

Category 1 - Basic Computer Use

Level 1 I do not use a computer.
Level 2 I can log-on, log-off, open, use, and close a few specific, pre-loaded programs.
Level 3 I can open and use more than one program at a time having multiple windows open at the same time.
Level 4 I can troubleshoot basic problems on my computer and printer. I learn new programs on my own. I teach basic operations to my students.

Category 2 - File Management

Level 1 I do not save any documents that I create with my computer.
Level 2 I can select, open, and save documents on different drives (a:, c:, d:, others).
Level 3 I create my own folders to keep my files organized and I understand the importance of keeping back up copies of my important files.
Level 4 I move files between folders and drives. I store and retrieve files from network drives. I teach students how to save and organize their files.

Category 3 - Word Processing

Level 1 I do not use a word processing program.
Level 2 I occasionally use a word processing program to create simple documents. I generally find it easier to hand write most of the written work that I do.
Level 3 I use a world processing program for most of the written documents that I create such as memos, tests, worksheets, etc. I can edit a document, use spell-check, change the format of a document and insert graphics from a variety of sources.
Level 4 I teach students how to use word processing programs for their written communication and encourage their regular use in my classroom.

Category 4 - Spreadsheets

Level 1 I do not use a spreadsheet.
Level 2 I understand the basics of spreadsheets. I can create simple spreadsheets, enter data, navigate from cell to cell, and create basic charts based on my data.
Level 3 I use spreadsheets for a variety of record keeping tasks. I use formulas, functions, cell references, and formatting tools. I choose charts which best represent my data. I apply titles and labels to my charts.
Level 4 I use spreadsheets in my classroom. I teach students how to use spreadsheets to improve their own data keeping and analysis skills and encourage their regular use in my classroom.

Category 5 - Databases

Level 1 I do not use databases.
Level 2 I understand the use of a database and use them to locate information from pre-made databases.
Level 3 I create my own databases. I define fields. I create simple queries, format data for viewing (forms or layouts), and format data for printing (reports).
Level 4 I use databases in my classroom. I teach students how to create and use databases to organize and analyze data.

Category 6 - Graphics

Level 1 I do not use graphics in the electronic documents that I create.
Level 2 I insert clipart into word processing and other types of documents. I resize and move the graphics.
Level 3 I use graphics from a variety of sources including clipart on my computer, the Internet, scanned images, CD collections, and images taken with a digital camera in order to clarify or amplify the main ideas of my lessons. I modify the graphics using program tools and/or graphic editing programs.
Level 4 I create original graphics. I encourage student interpretation and display of visual data using a variety of tools and programs.

Category 7 - Email

Level 1 I have an email account but I do not use it very often.
Level 2 I send messages using email, mostly to district colleagues, friends, and family. I check my email account on a regular basis.
Level 3 I organize my mail in folders for easy access. I use CC and BCC. I reply to and forward messages. I send and receive attachments safely.
Level 4 I incorporate email use into classroom activities. I use email to access information from outside sources and encourage my students to do the same. I use email to request and send information for research.

Category 8 - Research/Information Searching

Level 1 I do not use electronic sources to find information.
Level 2 I conduct simple searches for information using electronic information sources (encyclopedia, library software, Internet, CDs, etc.).
Level 3 I use a variety of search strategies, including Boolean searches, to locate information. I select, gather, and save information from electronic sources to answer a question or prepare a presentation. I use the information that I have found in a variety of documents including word processing and multimedia documents.
Level 4 I incorporate search strategies for electronic information into my classroom activities. I encourage my students to use electronic information sources to answer questions and complete assignments.

Category 9 - Desktop Publishing

Level 1 I do not use a desktop publishing program.
Level 2 I sometimes use a desktop publishing program to create a document for printing but I only use the built in templates and wizards.
Level 3 I create original publications from a blank page combining design elements such as columns, clip art, tables, and captions.
Level 4 I use desktop publishing in my classroom activities and to communicate with my students and the community. I teach students how to use desktop publishing software and encourage its use in learning activities.

Category 10 - Video Production

Level 1 I do not use a video camera
Level 2 I create original videos to use in learning activities but I do not digitize or edit them.
Level 3 I use video editing software to do basic editing of my original videos for use in my classroom.
Level 4 I add special effects to my videos. I save my videos for various formats. I use timelines and can trim video segments. I add audio to my videos. I teach my students how to capture and edit video and encourage them do use original videos in learning activities.

Category 11 - Multimedia Presentations

Level 1 I do not use presentation software.
Level 2 I create basic multimedia presentations that include a template with text, transitions, entry animations, and basic clip art.
Level 3 I create multimedia presentations that include sound from a variety of sources, video clips, graphics from a variety of sources, and animations. I use my presentations in my classroom to enhance learning experiences. 
Level 4 I teach my students how to use presentation software. I facilitate my students' use of multimedia presentation software to persuasively present their ideas and the results of their learning experiences.

Category 12 - Internet

Level 1 I do not use the Internet
Level 2 I visit Internet sites recommended by others and use navigation buttons to move between pages.
Level 3 I use Internet search engines to effectively and efficiently locate information to use in learning experiences.
Level 4 I create web pages for use in my classroom activities. I teach students how to effectively use Internet resources for learning and exploration. My learning activities often involve students using to Internet to locate, gather, analyze and synthesize information related to learning objectives.

Category 13 - Ethical/Responsible Use

Level 1 I am not aware of any ethical issues surrounding computer use.
Level 2 I know that some copyright restrictions apply to computer software.
Level 3 I understand district rules concerning student and adult use of email and the Internet. I know the programs for which the district or my building holds a site license. I understand the school board policy on the use of copyrighted materials.
Level 4 I model ethical use of all software and let my students know my personal stand on this issue.

Category 14 - Technology Integration

Level 1 I do not blend the use of computer-based technologies into my classroom learning activities.
Level 2 I understand that the TEKS supports integration of technology into classroom activities, but I am still learning about what strategies will work and how to do it. I accept student work produced electronically, but do not require it.
Level 3 From time to time I encourage my students to employ computer-based technologies to support technology skills outlined in the TEKS.
Level 4 I frequently model and teach my students to employ computer-based technologies for communication, data analysis, problem solving, and presentation as outline the TEKS.
